Swinton Lionesses have kept up the pressure on the top three with a victory over Oulton Raidettes.
The Lionesses ran out 36-4 despite losing Tiegan Shaw to injury in the second minute.
As play resumed the ball was moved out to Emma Welsford who broke through the Oulton defence – running 45 metres before rounding the full back to score between the posts.
And the Swinton Lionesses lead was extended to 6-0 as Eve Ashcroft converted.
Five minutes later, Kerrie Evans recovered the ball from an Oulton knock-on. She went on a 30-metre run to set up the Lionesses’ next attack which ended in them forcing a drop out.
But the Lionesses control of the game slipped as Oulton were able to get their only points of the game in the 16th minute.
From a scrum, the ball was moved out wide to Danielle Rose who forced her way over the line to score, unfortunately for the Raidettes, Honey Oxtoby was unable to add the extras.
But that wasn’t a concern for the Lionesses who extended their lead in the 23rd minute.
From a penalty, Ashcroft side-stepped her way through the defence to go a 30-metre run and set up Demi Fisher to score by the posts – and Ashcroft converted to extend the lead.
Four minutes later, Morgan Pearson went on a run to set up the Lionesses’ next attack, and the ball was moved out to Evans, but she was tackled just short of the line.
Despite the gap in points extending, Oulton continued to put pressure on Swinton but the home team’s defence remained strong.
In the last minute of the half Jasmine Wilson broke through the Oulton defence and side-stepped the fullback to score.
Ashcroft was unable to convert, but the Lionesses went into the break with a healthy 16-4 lead.
Oulton started the second half strongly but Swinton weathered the spell before Ashcroft recovered the ball and moved in out to Liv Argent who ran 20 metres before passing it on to Sammi Simpson who went on a 20-metre run to score under the posts.
Ashcroft converted once again to increase the lead to 22-4.
The Lionesses maintained their rampant display. A penalty in the 54th minute saw Simpson run the ball across the field before passing it to Grace Pritchard who scored out wide. Ashcroft was unable to convert on this attempt.
Four minutes later Liv Argent dummied her way through the Oulton defence to go on a 40-metre run to score out wide.
Again, the conversion was missed.
But only three minutes later, Abbie Singleton went on a 20-metre run before giving out a short pass to Emma Welsford who ran 20 metres before being tackled. The attack ended with the Lionesses knocking the ball on.
Multiple penalties gave the Lionesses good field position ten minutes later – and a good run by Charlotte Hill ended with her being tackled short of the line, with Maddie Higson going over from dummy half to score. Ashcroft converted to make it 36-4.
The Lionesses will now be looking to carry their winning momentum into their next away fixture against Feathersone Rovers on Sunday August 17.
