A pupil referral unit in Salford has been praised for its transformative work with young people receiving ‘Outstanding’ and ‘Good’ ratings  from Ofsted. 

The inspection of  the Broadwalk Green pupil referral unit (PRU), run by Salford City Council, was awarded an ‘Outstanding’ rating for its personal development and leadership and management.

They were also able to receive an awarded a ‘Good’ rating for the quality of education and behaviour and attitudes.

The PRU supports 55 pupils aged 11 to 14 years old who have previously struggled to mainstream education, with most having been excluded from school.

Broadwalk Green PRU relocated to a new venue in September 2024, with its pupils attending as long as necessary, whether its from six weeks to two years.

The Ofsted report praised the staff at Broadwalk Green PRU for the relationships they have built with pupils, who “go out of their way to get to know each pupil as an individual.”

The report also saw how SEND pupils have learnt to trust staff and are in a happy and safe environment.

The ratings given by Ofsted to the Broadwalk Green PRU will be a significant milestone and reflect the progress they have made.

It will continue to play a vital role in supporting the young people of Salford to ensure their life chances can be improved.

The unit also plays a part of a larger strategy to become a UNICEF-accredited Child Friendly City. Broadwalk Green are well on their way to the accreditation, delivering a broad and balanced curriculum and supporting personal development of pupils to improve their life chances.

With Lead member of Children’s Services at Salford City Council, Councillor Jim Cammell calling the accreditation “a priority in our corporate plan.”

There are various staff members who offer their support at the PRU, including teachers, SEND specialists, teaching assistants, family support workers and outreach and re-integration support.

Cllr. Cammell said: “We are very proud of our staff who help to ensure that the council’s schools provide high quality education, supporting children to recognise how to engage successfully with education.

He also continued to share that “these excellent Ofsted ratings are a fantastic achievement and really reflect the strong relationships that have been built with parents and carers and other agencies to support children and young people in Salford.”
