A Christmas appeal has raised more than £2,500 to support Salford pensioners who may be lonely or isolated.

The new initiative ‘Present for Pensioner‘ set up by CareYourWay, has raised £2,570 to provide 73 hampers.

The scheme will provide older Salford residents with hampers of a blanket, puzzle book, biscuits, tea, mice pies, shower gels, and either a jigsaw, hot water bottle, or thermal socks.

One in 10 people aged 60 and over anticipate having no one to talk to during the holidays so the charity has found no shortage of recipient

Residents have also been more generous than expected.

Director Becky Whitehouse said: “I didn’t expect us to get this amount of traction on it. We thought 10 was a push for us and then the fact that now we will be able to give 73 hampers out to people across the community is just incredible.”

The hampers will also include a Christmas card from CareYourWay, a note to say who has donated the money for the hamper, plus a special touch this year in the form of a card and drawing made by children at The Nurturing Hands Childcare in Little Hulton and Eccles.Christmas gifts - CareWay

The programme has been made possible by partnerships with local healthcare professionals who forward names of people who could benefit most from the hampers.

The fundraiser has also seen support from local businesses and individuals.

Becky said: “Whether it’s an elderly neighbour living alone, someone struggling with the loss of a loved one, or an individual simply in need of holiday cheer, the initiative ensures that no one feels forgotten during this special time of year.”
