Pages of Identity

Salford Community Libraries has collaborated with the Yemeni community association with the release of new book ‘Pages of Identity’.

Pages of Identity is a new book collection across both Eccles and Pendleton library focusing on the Arabic language with a collaboration between the Yemeni community association and Salford Community Libraries of Salford.

The collection hopes to bring the Muslim community into the library and discovering the voices stories and culture of Arab men and women from across the world.

These books have been specifically curated by Salford libraries in a partnership with the Yemeni Community Association. The books are available from both sites but you have to be a member of the library to borrow them.

There are books for all ages from a children’s collection of Arabic picture books, short reads and dual language picture books which help young children learn English. An adult collection is also available with Arabic fiction and non-fiction about ethnicity, identity and culture.

There is also biography by British Muslim Noonruddean Choudry and Mohammad Chowdhury. Books to support reading and learning English such as Penguin Easy Reads and English grammar books are available to loan.

The organiser, Sara Mountford, discussed the project and what it means for the Muslim community in Salford: “We are just launching our collection for the Muslim community which we’ve put together with the Yemeni Community Association , we launched it officially at Pendleton library.

“Its a mix of both adult and children books in Arabic and English, its an eclectic collection as well as that there is English learning resources for people to improve there English.”

On how this will benefit the Arabic community Sara continued: “We know there’s a growing community across the whole of Salford, ideally we love to be able to put it in all the libraries in Salford , people can reserve the books online you just have to be a member.”
We’ve been speaking to the Yemeni community for a long time they’ve been really fantastic and helpful with putting this collection together and helping us to promote it with Arabic school.

“There is around 300 books in total there is also an electronic catalogue on our digital service Borrowbox.”

Borrowbox is an online service provided by the library for its members with E-books. E-Audiobooks and E-Magazines which you can access from an app.

On the future of the service Sara finished added: “Hopefully there is room for getting more in.”
