Swinton Christmas Tree

Residents in Swinton have expressed their disappointment with the Christmas Tree outside Swinton Square.

The Christmas decorations were erected at the Swinton Square shopping centre this week, featuring silver stars on the street lights and a solitary Christmas tree surrounded by railings in the square outside ASDA.

Residents took to Facebook straight away to voice their disappointment, with one resident describing the festive display as “insulting”, with many more echoing the sentiment that this year’s efforts were not up to standard.

The post mocking the decorations quickly went viral amongst Swinton residents, amassing a variety of opinions from Salfordians.

Some described the decorations as a representation of Swinton as a whole, expressing their concerns about the state of the town: “The decline of shopping centres both in Swinton and across Salford is best symbolised by this tree.”

Swinton Square is an open-air shopping centre, which is located in the centre of Swinton.

It has been a popular attraction within the town for 45 years since its opening, and has provided the controversial decorations.

Swinton Square were approached for comment but didn’t reply.

Swinton has been struggling in recent times, with more and more businesses pulling out of the town every year.

One resident  expressed her frustration with the state of Swinton’s high street, complaining that the only shops left were charity shops, with another describing it as “pathetic.”

Others were less offended by the state of the decor, with one Salfordian saying she was “grateful for any effort put in,” and that the tree would “raise spirits” for those in Swinton with “absolutely nothing.”

Another resident agreed with this stance, insisting that the low-key decorations were fitting for the “nice little town” they were in.

The Christmas decorations have been up for debate and can be visited in Swinton Square for the rest of the festive period.
