Residents in Salford have been able to secure full-time jobs after participating in a new spray plastering programme.
The programme led by Build Salford in association with Salford City Council and has been set up to provide a significant boost to construction skills training.
The plan had commenced at the end of September, and saw nine participants eager to pursue careers in plastering enrolled onto the programme.
The project would be compromised of practical learning combined with hands-on experience on a live site – while also addressing the construction industry’s skills gap.
As a part of the two-week programme, participants spent five days in training and five days on site, working closely with experts from CWS, Domis, and other key partners.
Following the experience, it was able to create eight full-time jobs including five plastering trainee positions and three labourer roles, with further opportunities for traineeships anticipated over the next six months.
With two participants, Evie and Mason, now set to work on the construction of the Salford Youth Zone, working for CWS as a sub-contractor of Domis.
Following the success, Councillor Pepper, Salford City Council’s Lead Member for Skills, Work, and Business Support shared her praise for the programme.
Cllr Pepper said: “This plastering programme is a brilliant opportunity for Salford residents to break into construction with the guidance and backing of some of our city’s top employers.
“The skills and experience they gained here are essential to the future of construction, and I’m incredibly proud of Salford’s proactive approach to developing our local workforce.”
And it seems that it has been essential for the future of Salford’s workforce, as it was developed with no entry requirements, ensuring accessibility for a broad range of participants.
The support has also been reinforced by local employers allowing them to get firsthand experience, and this was shared by Tony Banks, Managing Director of CWS, who said: “By opening doors to people from all walks of life and recognising dedication over background.
“We’re not only supporting career development, but also strengthening the future of our industry and community.
“True progress in construction isn’t just about building structures; it’s about building opportunities.”
Build Salford, along with its employer partners, will continue supporting participants as they progress on their paths toward stable and rewarding careers, and will hope to provide further opportunities over the next six months.
And all involved will continue to encourage residents to join the programme, as Richard Coffey, Managing Director at F&T Terrix continued to encourage residents.
He said: “As a business, we are committed to working closely with local councils and educational facilities to support the next generation of construction workers.
“It was an absolute pleasure for us to host the spray plastering programme at our training facility.”
