The results were compelling in showing that people believe it is a positive to workout and go to the gym.

So, how does the gym have a positive effect on people’s mental health?

After a workout the body produces endorphins which will relieve pain, reduce stress and boost overall sense of well-being. They are often described as a runner’s high.

Sixty-five-year-old Billy Platt is a caretaker at a block of flats in Eccles and has been going to the Eccles Leisure Centre for 10 years. He said: “Working out is definitely positive for your mental health, especially when you do what I do.

“I’m 65 but it makes me feel a lot younger. I try to keep myself fit, I do a lot of walking and running.
“I do a lot of working out not with big heavy weights.”

A recent study by BMC Public Health found that 53.05% of men and 41.99% of women used anabolic or androgenic steroids. You can view this study here

Major downsides to gym culture and working out is steroid abuse. There are major side effects to steroid use, including liver damage, acne and heart disease.

Body dysmorphia is a mental health disorder where people have an obsession with a perceived flaw on their body. This can affect many men and women who workout hard and are still not happy with how they look.

There are several gyms and leisure centres in Salford where people go to work out, including Irlam and Cadishead, Eccles, Pure Gym and Virgin Active.
