The Walkden community will come together this weekend at St Paul’s Church to help families that may not be able to afford copious amounts of presents this Christmas.
Service organiser Barbara Barratt said: “The poverty rate for children in the area is quite high, which is why we’re keen to help the local community.”
The service is held on Advent Sunday at 10.30am (December 3) at St Paul’s Church which is located at 6 Old Vicarage Gardens in Walkden (M28 3JR) and will begin with the traditional lighting of the first candles in the advent wreath.
This will be followed by hymns and a regular morning prayer as people bring their gifts to the front of the church ready for them to be dispensed into the community.
Barbara explained that she hopes “people will recognise the need of many in the community and continue to give.
“I also hope that it will raise the ‘feel good factor’ and make people recognise how fortunate they are.”
The church is asking for donations of presents or toys aimed at children up to the age of 16 – they also collect selection boxes and Christmas treats for the local food bank, sweet treats are also encouraged.
This service has been successful in previous years, and the church also holds a Christmas Tree Festival at around the same time.
The local food bank will be in charge of overseeing the distribution of the gifts and food donated, and there will be tea and a chat available after the service.
The Walkden church wants to encourage the community to come down with a gift aimed at children age 3-16 and spread some Christmas joy.
