Irlam Endowed Primary School has started a donation scheme to support Wood St. Mission, a charity that helps families in Salford and Manchester living on a low income.
The primary school set up the ‘Christmas Toy Drive’ scheme which started last week and runs until December 7. Anyone is welcome to bring toys and gifts or give monetary donations by dropping them off at the school’s front office on Chapel Rd.
The school has taken £200 out of its Parent Teacher Association funding to give back to those who donate.
In exchange for the donation, they are offering a weekly raffle prize draw which is drawn on a Friday by the head teacher, Ben Lynch, and the winner will receive a £50 all-for-one voucher.
Irlam primary school teacher, Jenny Hopley, said: “One of our core values as a school is kindness.
“Christmas time is usually one of our biggest earners as a school, but we wanted to give as much as we could back to the community this year, so we decided that all the money we raise in December will be for our chosen local charity”.
Irlam Endowed are working to inspire kindness in children at the school, so they have been getting the children involved in collecting donations.
Jenny explains: “They will see the donations and be like ‘Oh look at that, somebody is going to be so happy they will get to open a Nerf gun on Christmas day’,”.
Jessica says the school and committee recognise that: “Christmas is a really materialistic time; we want to shift the focus to kindness and find ways to show it.
“It’s not compulsory for people to do; it’s just to give what you can as an act of kindness.”
