A JustGiving page to raise money to expand the Boothstown Youth Club has topped its £2,000 goal in less than two days.
The club, with help from Boothstown and Ellenbrook Councillor, Bob Clarke, runs every Friday evening at the Boothstown Community Centre.
Around 25 children attend the club, focusing on arts, crafts and cooking skills.
The club originally started out with no provisions, with Salford City Council eventually providing staff, and Cllr Clarke paying for the hire of the space.
Instead of having to charge people to attend, he decided to instead create a fundraiser page for public donations.
The residents’ response has surprised Cllr Clarke.
He said: “I’m just stunned. It’s still going up today, it’s just hit £2,300. One of the comments says that their grandchildren like to go to it and are happy to contribute.”
So far, more than 100 people and organisations have contributed to the JustGiving page.
Local businesses have contributed, with Risch Designs Limited, Bridgewater Funeral Service and Roe Green Cricket Club donating £100 each.
Money raised by the drive will see extra funding for activities at the club.
Cllr Clarke said: “Some of the youths want to display their artwork on boards, they’ve mentioned games, especially table tennis.
“The kids going are really liking it and meeting their mates in a safe, warm space.”
The club has also come with some benefits, with the police noting a decrease in anti-social behaviour around the Community Centre since the club took off.
Cllr Clarke added: “It’s just fun activities for them to do instead of hanging around on the streets and it seems to be working quite well.”
