Strong winds have left the Quays’ litter-collection boat unable to remove huge amounts of rubbish from outside The Alchemist cocktail bar.
MediaCity’s bar ‘The Alchemist’ has seen noticeable amounts of litter surrounding its Quayside shore.
The MediaCity Site Manager, Barry Devine said: “It’s been going for years now, [the wind] travels down. Every time there is some sort of high winds or any time there is some kind of storm it blows all the rubbish at us.
Salford Council implemented tactics to efficiently collect Quayside litter via a ‘litter boat’, with the Merseyside trust boat collecting the rubbish. Mr Devine continued: “The boat comes regularly, they’re pretty efficient to be fair, they come round in the boat, but it’s just when you get those high winds it gathers, as you can see down there.”
Barry stressed how the rubbish has impacted the bar. He continued: “People are here for the views, fantastic cocktails, and there’s lots of ‘instagraming’ going on so yeah, that background isn’t ideal. It does take away massively from what we’re trying to bring to Salford.Everything we’re about here is this terrace.”
Visitors to Media City have also complained about the build-up. A paddle-boarder said: “I was on the Quay, and it was a bit horrible. I did a paddle board lesson, and obviously you can fall in when you’re learning, so it was a bit nasty to think that you’d fall in on water that had all this rubbish in.”
Another shared how there should be more responsibility taken by Salford citizens, by tackling how they dispose of their own waste produce: “I think anyone who drops rubbish is wrong, there’s enough bins, and if you bring your rubbish with you… take it home.”
Salford City Council were contacted for a statement on the litter-collection boat service.
