Andy Burnham travels to MediaCity to show the reality of public transport costs

Taking a bus and a tram from Middleton to Salford’s MediaCity costs almost £5, proving that public transport is more expensive here than in London, according to Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.

Burnham made the journey from an area not served by the current tram network to the BBC where he was being interviewed to show how expensive travel can be outside the capital.

He vows to plan immediate talks with the Government to improve Greater Manchester’s transport costs and bus franchising to meet London’s standards.

In the video posted to his Twitter account, he raises the question: “Why should public transport be more expensive in less affluent parts of the country?”

This morning Andy took a bus and tram from Middleton to MediaCity to show where Greater Manchester’s public transport system is falling short and why we need to deliver a fully-integrated, affordable and accessible network.
