MORE than 200 people swapped their beds for sleeping bags in Manchester’s Sleep Out 2017.
The event took place in the unheated London Road Fire Station in Manchester city centre,
one of the city’s most iconic historical buildings, on October 19.
Sleep Out Manchester, organised by Centrepoint, aims to raise funds to support more than 2,000 homeless young adults in Manchester this year.
Nicholas Connolly, head of cooperative development at Centrepoint, said: ”We are hoping to raise a million pounds nationally through Sleep Out over the next month.
“We are not about helping a young person to get a council house and sit there forever; we don’t think that’s success.
“Once we house a young person, it’s making sure that young person develops the skills to
become independent, successful and proud of what they’ve achieved.”
The majority of young people become homeless because of family breakdown.
Centrepoint is a long-standing charity which provides practical support and advice to vulnerable young people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Since 1969, Centrepoint has helped more than 116,000 homeless young adults.
The Co-operative Bank is supporting Centrepoint’s work in Manchester though a charity
partnership and it has raised £130,000 for Centrepoint so far.
