Free books, reindeer crafts and hot chocolate were on the menu at a Winter Wellbeing Fair in Salford.

Visitors were invited to learn more about the wide-ranging work of the Energise Healthy Living Centre on Douglas Green.

A host of different mental and physical health charities were at the event on Tuesday, December 2, to explain how they can help Salford residents.

Bringing community together is important in winter, and especially in the run up to Christmas, and the Energise Centre put the community at the forefront. A fundraising raffle was run to support its activities.

Community services manager Gina Hine said: “We work very closely with the local community to try and provide activities that help people live happier, healthier lives.”

Safieh Eskandari, director of Salford Community Doosti, presented a beautiful collection of artwork and handmade jewellery. The Doosti community aims to support integration and inclusivity into the local community through creativity and passion. It offers a range of activities from English speaking classes to art projects.

National Literacy Trust Stall

The National Literacy Trust also had a stall at the fair, giving away free books. Its Salford Hub is aiming to improve literacy levels and interest in reading across the city.

Salford Hub manager, Martha O’Brien, said: “We’ve also got a mission over Christmas to donate a further 3,000 books.”

The fair also had a hot chocolate reindeer craft station, and a festive colouring table.

Visitor Cath Walton said: “We’ve got storybooks for our grandchildren, because they love reading.

“We made reindeer, which was nice.

“I’ve found a few groups I’d like to join. They gave me a list of all the different groups and what days they do it.”

The Energise centre is part of the Big Life Group organisation, which is a Manchester-based organisation that aims to help people facing difficulties, or juggling many things at once.

The Energise centre offers health and wellbeing services, as well as a GP surgery. The centre is community led, and hosts many volunteering opportunities, as well as classes and groups.
