The Lime e-scooter trial in Salford is entering its final six months, leaving residents and commuters wondering what the future holds for the city’s micro-mobility scheme.

Lime scooters have become a familiar sight across the city since their launch in a pilot scheme in 2021 offering a convenient, low-emission alternative for short journeys.

Salford City Council, Lime, The Department for Transport (dft) and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) will soon decide whether to extend, scale back or make the scheme permanent after the trial ends next May.

A Lime spokesperson said: “”Our e-scooter scheme in Salford has gone from strength to strength since it was launched in 2021. We continue to see impressive usage across the city, helping to replace car trips, support active travel and get local residents around the city safely and efficiently.

“We’re excited to continue working with Salford City Council to make our service available for more people in and around Salford.”

The original trial extension has given different operators the chance to put their case for running any longer-term scheme but Lime is seen as the frontrunner.

Thousands of trips have been made since the trial began, with supporters highlighting its environmental benefits and potential to reduce car use. At the same time, concerns about safety, pavement clutter, and occasional misuse have led to calls for stricter regulation.

After speaking to members of the public the general view of the e-scooters was positive.

Salford resident Faith Newman, 20, said: “I think that the Lime Scooters are cheap and easy to use. They help me get to work on time especially with all the bus strikes.”

Another local Rebecca Busaka, 20, said: “I’d be very upset if they don’t extend the trial that ends in May. I use them to get around every day because they make 20 minute journeys turn into a 5-10 minute ones. It’s a bonus that they’re fun to ride.”

Despite the uncertainty, the scooters remain a popular option for short trips across Salford, particularly among students and young professionals. The final decision on the scheme’s future is expected by the end of the trial in May 2026.
