Salford graduate Cristina Wright recovers from illness to land ITV role

University of Salford graduate defied life-altering illness to achieve a distinction and secure a major role at ITV.

Cristina Wright completed her MSc Financial Technology this week at the University of Salford and has been appointed as a Master Data Specialist at ITV after a remarkable recovery.

In 2021, Cristina contracted COVID-19 and developed Covid pneumonitis, leaving her with critically low oxygen levels. She spent months in an induced coma on a ventilator and later required a tracheostomy.

During rehabilitation, she developed a systemic fungal infection that caused neurological decline and paralysis.

She was diagnosed with Critical Illness Neuropathy and Guillain-Barré Syndrome, conditions that continue to affect her mobility and stamina.

Cristina said: “Life does not wait for us to feel ready. We grow into our strength by moving, even when the path ahead feels uncertain.

“The only direction left is forward. Every step – however challenging – brings me closer to that outcome.”

Despite this, Cristina rebuilt her life from scratch. She returned to education a decade after completing her undergraduate degree and balanced full-time work in Financial Shared Services with postgraduate study, physiotherapy and essential rest.

Her determination led to a distinction and a pivotal role at ITV, where she now supports financial data accuracy and governance. The role draws directly on the analytical and technical skills she developed during her MSc.

Dr Zeeshan Syed, lecturer in finance and economics, said: “Cristina is one of the most exceptional people I have ever taught. Her resilience and work ethic are extraordinary. I am incredibly proud of her.”

Cristina said her success was supported by family, friends, colleagues and the University. She said early team achievements during the MSc helped rebuild her confidence.

Now based in Greater Manchester, she plans to continue strengthening her professional credentials by pursuing ACCA accreditation.

The determination of Salford graduate Cristina Wright continues to inspire her peers and staff across the University.
