They said: “If your primary desire for having a trans character in your media is representation, you’re going to create someone who isn’t real. It’s important that when I write a character, I need this to be someone that exists in the real world.”

Aksil said: “For me, when I come up with an idea I come up with it pretty fast. I figure out how I want it to go in my head but the main difficulty is the casting. Writing has never really been too difficult for me.

“It’s based on my own life experience and what I’ve seen in the world. It’s a comedy, what I think is funny in my life and my friends’ lives.”

Coming from Canada, Aksil has experienced being queer in both Canada and the UK.

“It’s interesting since the UK is seen as more conservative when it comes to trans rights. I think I actually see more trans people around living their day than in Toronto. I think people here are not necessarily giving into their fear, it’s good to see.”

Th UK Supreme Court ruled recently that the definition of a woman is based on biological sex, not the gender identity that people have. This contradicts a long history of LGBTQ+ representation in the UK.

Aksil started making films at a young age and quickly found success.

He said: “I was 18 and I submitted to the Grand River Film Festival and I got in and actually won the 18 to 25 category. I had always loved watching movies and writing – that’s kind of where I started.”
