Salford City will look for revenge as they face Rotherham United at the Peninsula Stadium tomorrow night in a round of 32 Vertu Trophy clash

The draw, which took place last week, paired the League One Millers with the Ammies. The two clubs previously met in August, in the opening round of the Carabao Cup, with Rotherham defeating The Ammies 3-2 on penalties, after a tight goalless contest. Karl Robinson’s side will be hopeful of providing a strong challenge to the League One outfit.

Salford made it through the group stages unbeaten, winning all three of their cup games and causing upset against two north-west rivals, Stockport and Wigan, and now placing themselves as favourites to win the clash against a side that has recently found its form.

Rotherham made it into the last 32 by finishing as runners-up in their respective group, starting their campaign 1-0 loss to group winners Bolton Wanderers, before ending with victories over League Two Oldham Athletic and Manchester City Under-21s.

Salford previously won the competition in the 2019-20 season for the first time in the club’s history, defeating Portsmouth on penalties 4-2 in a clash at Wembley. The Ammies will once again look to cause an upset and a trip to Wembley in the process.

With Rotherham winning the trophy twice in their history, once in 1996 and the second in 2022, coming from behind against Sutton United at Wembley and closing it out in extra time.

On the weekend, Kallum Cesay’s late winner secured all three points for Salford City against Crawley, keeping their promotion hopes alive as they move into a playoff position.

With Rotherham gaining only three points from their last three fixtures in League One and an injury crisis, including their star striker Sam Nombe, Salford go into the Vertu Trophy match as the favourites to win.

With the home advantage, a familiar opponent in front of them, and a shot at the round of 16 on the line, Salford City will be looking to advance through their stellar cup run.
