Weaste Pride have raised more than £200 for a leading HIV organisation for World AIDS Day, in an effort to dispel disinformation and change the perceptions of living with HIV.
December 1 2025 marks the 37th annual World AIDS Day, a day to raise awareness and mourn those who have lost their lives to HIV.
Ian Carberry from Weaste Pride has been proudly fundraising for George House Trust, an organisation whose mission is to create “a world where HIV holds no one back”. He has been selling red ribbons and sharing his JustGiving link where possible.
Ian said: “I want people to feel seen, supported and not alone. If raising money helps someone get the care or advice they need without feeling judged, then that’s the job done”.
According to a 2025 report by the Department of Health and Social Care, there are 37 people in Salford living with diagnosed HIV.
Ian added: “These charities give people real facts, real support and real hope. That matters more than ever”.
“Growing up in the 80s and 90s, most of what we heard about HIV and AIDS was fear. Charities like George House Trust were some of the only places offering truth, support and a bit of dignity”.
Suzie Gordon spoke on behalf of George House Trust.
She said: “The charity landscape right now is really tricky to navigate and people supporting us from different businesses, corporate partnerships, et cetera, really help us to stay afloat”.
George House Trust was set up in 1985 by six gay HIV activists and has continued to grow and expand over the last 40 years. They offer support, advice and guidance on life with HIV to anyone who may require it. They hammer home that “there is still life with HIV”.
Ian also believes further education and conversation around HIV can help us move towards a less stigmatised, educated society.
He said: “Talk about it. Share information. Challenge nonsense when you hear it. Support events, donate when you can, volunteer your time or simply show up. Even small things help. The more people keep the conversation alive, the more we move towards a world where HIV carries no shame and support is easy to access for everyone”.
