A Salford tenant says repeated yearly rent rises in Eccles are making it harder for young people to stay in the area.

Rachel Fazio, who has lived in her property for three years, says the increase happens every year and has left her considering whether the property is worth the expensive rent. “My rent goes up quite a bit every year”, she said. “I’ve never really given an explanation; it just happens.”

She says the cost of renting in Eccles is now pushing young couples and new starters out of the area. “It’s really difficult, especially for young couples or people just starting out.”

Rachel, 29, has said she has noticed more people her age returning to live with parents or moving into shared accommodation because they can no longer afford to rent alone. “People are staying with their parents longer or moving into shared accommodation because they can no longer afford to live alone.” She said.

Between early 2033 and early 2024, the average rent in the Eccles area rose by 8.2%. The average monthly rent in Salford rose to £1,143 in October 2025. This rate is higher than the annual rent increase for the entire Northwest region.

Salford has experienced rapid growth in areas such as Ordsall, Media City, and Eccles, driven by increased demand from young professionals.

For Rachel, the problem is bigger than one rent rise. “Renters are suffering; it’s hard to save for a mortgage and pay bills,” she said. Her experience reflects a growing concern in Salford that young people are being priced out of the places they’ve long called home.
