The MP for Bolton and Walkden South has asked for the two-child benefit cap to be scrapped in the upcoming budget in a letter to the Chancellor.
Yasmin Qureshi MP outlined her concerns that the cap is one of the most significant drivers of raising child poverty that requires urgent action.
She highlighted the struggles with the cost of living, saying: “With prices continuing to rise, parents are having to make impossible choices between heating, clothing and food.”
Removing the two-child limit for benefits could take 350k children out of poverty, support working families who are struggling & deliver on our promise to give every child the best start in life.

In her letter to Rachel Reeves, Qureshi detailed a meet with social action charity Salford Caritas, where they outlined the hardship faced by Salford families.
She said: “One headteacher told them that more than three-quarters of pupils at the school are currently experiencing poverty.”
Appeals to the Chancellor to scrap the two-child benefit cap seemed to have worked and it is speculated that the policy will be removed in the budget, which is set to release on 26 November.
Speaking about her letter, Qureshi said: “I know that the Chancellor has tough decisions to make, but this is a choice between continuing down the path of austerity, or providing hope and opportunity for our children.”
This makes her the second Salford MP to plea for the cap to be scrapped after Rebecca Long-Bailey MP.
Long-Bailey was recently one of seven Labour MPs to rebel and vote in favour of the scrap, this follows a previous vote to get rid of the cap in July 2024 where she had the whip suspended for 6 months.
