A group of Salford schoolchildren have been cracking down on parents’ driving offences as part of an initiative to involve them in policing.

The Policing Team for Irlam and Cadishead has reintroduced the Junior PCSO project at Irlam Primary School.

PCSO Mark Fitzgerald from Irlam and Cadishead neighbourhood Policing Team has set up the junior project after the last junior PCSOs (Junior Police Community Support Officers) moved onto to high school.

Two weeks ago for national road safety week, the children stood outside the school with a speed gun, checking motorists to remind road users about the importance of keeping their speed in check on Liverpool Road. Anyone doing more than 30 mph had their details taken.

PCSO Fitzgerald gave them their new name badges, pocket notebooks and clipboards.

The PCSO said: “We will be taking them out again soon looking at parking around the school, helping ensure a safer environment for everyone.

“The new recruits are students from the school where they are based and help with things like parents parking on double yellow lines , zigzags or parking inappropriately around the school at various times of the day.

“The scheme works fantastically well, with parents thinking twice where to park when dropping off and picking up their children at school. The local residents of Irlam and Cadishead often comment how good this scheme is in getting the kids involved in their Community to keep them and others safe.

“It was really nice again to hear local residents passing by saying how nice it is to get the kids involved, we even got quite few motorist beep, smile, wave, all good fun to keep everyone safe.”
