A new staging of The Talented Mr Ripley at The Lowry Theatre offers a gripping and accessible introduction to the story, bringing its themes of identity and ambition to life on stage.
Directed by Mark Leipacher, The Talented Mr Ripley is a gripping investigative tale between Richard Greenleaf and Thomas Ripley, which explores themes of friendship and betrayal. It emphasises a clash between past and present through the characterisation of the protagonist, Mr Ripley, who is in conflict with his current life.
During scenes of struggle, lead Ed Mcvey, who plays Tom Ripley, breaks the fourth wall with a compelling address to the audience, expressing disappointment about his earnings and his past actions and detailing how he met Greenleaf when he was sent to retrieve him from Europe.
A fantastic introduction to Anthony Minghella’s story for newcomers, the play captures the essence of the 1999 film it is based on. It covers themes of friendship and betrayal as Ripley’s envy of Greenleaf’s wealth and girlfriend, Marge.
From highlighting the internal battle faced by Ripley when seeing how rich Greenleaf was, to portraying a chilling murder on Italian soil, Leipatcher’s play had the audience inside The Lowry Theatre gripped throughout.
His retelling of Minghella’s story is good and the play encourages viewers to open up to different perspectives.
The Talented Mr Ripley runs at The Lowry Theatre until 22 November, so you can decide just how well the show replicates the feeling of Minghella’s gripping crime thriller.
