A new community initiative at Salford Lifestyle Centre is helping local men boost both their physical fitness and mental wellbeing, completely free of charge.
The Men’s Exercise Classes, held at The Rec, Salford Gymnastics Centre on Camp Street, invite men of all ages and fitness levels to take part in friendly, supportive workout sessions every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 am.
The sessions combine physical exercise with open conversation, aiming to break down barriers around men’s mental health and encourage connection within the community.
Speaking on how the idea for these classes started, event organiser Nick Burke said: “We’ve always had a good rapport with the local community in terms of them wanting to come in and have a chat with you.”
“Someone came in and asked us one day, when does this take place, but we were like, it doesn’t, this is just what we do.”

“We ended up having a chat and decided that we should do something where men can come in every Tuesday and Thursday.”
The classes include a mix of light weights, stretching, and group-based activities, creating a welcoming environment where men can “lift weights and meet mates.”
Participants are encouraged not only to get active but also to talk, share experiences, and support one another.
Salford Lifestyle Centre says the initiative is designed to promote overall wellbeing through movement, friendship, and positive mental health habits. Inductions take place on the same days as the sessions, making it easy for newcomers to join at any time.
Burke added: “If you’re in control of your body, you kind of somewhat feel like you have more control of your day-to-day life.”
The classes are free and open to all men, with no need for prior gym experience.
