Salford City have been drawn against Rotherham United in the Vertu Trophy round of 32.
The Ammies were knocked out by the South Yorkshire side on penalties in the Carabao Cup and will hope to make amends in the competition they famously won in 2021.
Salford booked their place in the knockout stages of the tournament with a dominant 4-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-21s.
Karl Robinson’s side progressed through a group containing Wolves, Wigan and Stockport County with a perfect record.
With four wins in their last five games, Salford are in fine form and sit fourth in League Two. They are chasing their first taste of League promotion since they reached the fourth tier in 2019.
Son of Nicky Butt, treble winner with Manchester United, Ruben made headlines in Tuesday night’s fixture in the Vertu trophy, scoring two goals in his first start for the club.
“I believe in his talent, I really do”, said manager Karl Robinson when asked about the 18-year-old in his pre-match press conference ahead of the club’s test against MK Dons on Saturday.
Rotherham United sit twelfth in Sky Bet League One, turning form around after a poor start to the season under Matt Hamshaw, only falling to a defeat twice in their last ten games.
The two clubs previously met in August, in the opening round of the Carabao Cup, with Rotherham defeating The Ammies 3-2 on penalties, after a tight goalless contest and Karl Robinson’s side will be hopeful of providing a strong challenge to the League One outfit.
Salford previously won the competition in the 2019-20 season for the first time in the club’s history, defeating Portsmouth on penalties 4-2 in a clash at Wembley.
The tie is due to take place in the week commencing 1st December 2025 at The Peninsula Stadium, with further ticket details to be released in due course.
