Eccles Chess Club have won Greater Manchester and Stockport leagues.

This achievement was celebrated at their annual meeting, which took over the UK’s only dedicated High Street chess building. The club celebrates their success and claims: “Eccles is becoming the heart of Chess in the North”.

The club’s previous success at the French European Chess Tournament was achieved by Gediminas Sarakauskas and Martin Mitchell in December 2024.

Barbara Farrar, owner and manager of the club, has been urged to select two more players to compete in the tournament towards the end of the year.

With recent visit from chess grandmaster, Danny Gormally, who came and “captivated” the club for two hours, the club is eager to keep their members learning and improving, with engaging talks from more experienced players with opportunity for book and board signing.

Barbara said: “Danny has a real gift for engaging the audience and getting people to interact with one another, which is such a positive way to share chess with our community”.

There are opportunities for everyone to get involved with organised groups, such as social chess nights, running regularly every Wednesday, ‘Ladies and Learners’ on a Monday and further sessions for more advanced players.
