This December will see the return of the free Lightwaves show to Salford Quays for a twelfth consecutive year.
With something for all ages and families to enjoy, the festival will feature many captivating light installations that will transform the waterside after dark.
Lightwaves Salford is presented by Quays Culture and will feature 12 colourful light installations, many of which are interactive through the use of music and light. The festival is being held in a bid to entice visitors to explore Salford Quays and Media City at night.
Rachel Candler, Interim Head of Programme for Quays Culture, talked about this year’s line-up: “The Quays Culture team are really excited by the programme of artworks for what will be the 12th edition of Lightwaves Salford and perhaps our most interactive yet.
“This year, the focus is on artworks that visitors can engage with on a more human scale. So we’re looking forward to seeing playful moments and even some dancing.
“Year on year, Lightwaves Salford delights audiences of all ages and we’re sure that 2025 will be no exception. For many of our visitors, Lightwaves Salford marks the start of the festive period, getting together with friends or family for a dazzling evening of light art as we head into the winter months.”
The artwork themes vary from highlighting climate change, the nostalgia of a seaside arcade and our connection to the natural world. The aim is to bring people together and offer them a sense of optimism, positivity and togetherness.
Caroline Aikman, Director of Marketing & Place at Media City, expressed her excitement for the festival: “Lightwaves Salford is a signature event of the winter season at Media City – a place where creativity, technology and community come together.
“As it returns in early December, our waterfront and spaces will once again become a living canvas for artists and technologists pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with light, sound and digital art.”
The festival will take place across Salford Quays and Media City from Thursday 4 December until Sunday 7 December, from 4pm until 10pm. There will be plenty of food and drink options at all the usual bars and restaurants within Media City. There will also be a diverse range of traders at Kargo MKT within the Quayside.
Tickets are not required, the public can just show up and enjoy the festival. The trail of 12 artworks is 1.5km and is fully accessible. Maps of the trail will be made available in advance online but visitors may use any route they like.
