MileShy Running Club

Salford residents have been walking, cycling, running and scooting their way to fitness as Beat the Street Salford enters its final week.

The citywide physical activity game has seen more than 18,200 people take part, collectively cover 75,000 miles.

The initiative has transformed Salford into a giant outdoor game with checkpoints called Beat Boxes placed on lamp posts across the city.

Players earn points for themselves and their teams by tapping their game cards or fobs on the boxes as they travel between them.

The challenge runs until 7pm on Wednesday, 5 November, with every Beat Box now offering double points during the final “Go celebrate” week.

There are plenty of rewards on offer for participants. The top school, community and workplace teams will receive vouchers for sports equipment, books and fitness gear.

Players can also choose to support one of several local charities, including Age UK, Salford Loaves & Fishes, Lowry Centre Trust and Salford Foundation Trust.

At the moment, Eccles-based Lewis Street Primary School lead the total points leaderboard, followed by St Mark’s CE Primary School in Worsley, and Monton Green Primary School.

On average points leaderboard – based on the average points per participant in each group – Salford Loaves and Dishes currently sits in first place, with Husky and MileShy Club Salford in second and third.

Beyond the competition, Beat the Street is helping to make Salford greener. The miles clocked up by participants will contribute to hundreds of new trees being planted in partnership with the Greater Manchester charity City of Trees.

Residents will also have the chance to become ‘Citizen foresters’, volunteering to help with tree planting and maintenance across the city.

Councillor Mishal Saeed, Executive Support Member for Social Care and Mental Health, added: “It has been wonderful to see so many people outdoors on foot seeking points.

“The Beat the Street game has provided a positive initiative that will enable people to get outdoors together.”

The game concludes on Wednesday 5 November at 7pm, after which the leaderboards will close, and winners will be announced shortly after.

Results and updates will be shared on the Beat the Street Salford website at: Salford | Beat the Street.
