A group of Salford youngsters have showcased their talent with performance of reimagined Greek myths at the House of Lords.

The event, held this month, saw 25 young people perform ‘Gods of Salford’, a piece commissioned by The Lowry Theatre as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations.

Inspired by Greek mythology, the production reimagined ancient stories through the lens of modern-day Salford life, exploring themes of resilience, identity and social change.

The project has been co-created with acclaimed theatre company Not Too Tame, known for breaking boundaries and championing working-class voices

Julia Fawcett OBE, chief executive of The Lowry said: Gods of Salford isn’t just theatre, it’s a celebration of what’s possible when young people are seen, heard and supported. We wanted to bring the spirit of the project to the House of Lords and showcase how the arts can unlock potential and drive meaningful social change.”

Hosted by Lord McDonald of Salford, the evening consisted of performances and speeches from Salford Mayor Coun Paul Dennett, Jimmy Fairhurst of Not Too Tame and Ms Fawcett OBE.

Coun Dennett added: “It is fantastic that The Lowry’s youth programme has performed at the House of Lords and given our young people a unique opportunity. The event showcased the creativity and talent of our future generation and highlighted the importance of the arts in our communities.”

Deputy City Mayor Tracy Kelly also praised the young people involved, saying: “Our young people showed the incredible talent we have in this city, and I am so proud of them. The energy in the room was felt by all — it was very emotional and a performance that those in attendance will definitely remember.”

Directed by Jimmy Fairhurst of Not Too Tame, Gods of Salford was originally staged earlier this year as part of The Lowry’s 25th birthday programme. The project offered hands-on creative experience for young people across Salford, including technical and backstage roles.

Based in Warrington, Not Too Tame is an award-winning theatre company that aims to make theatre accessible to everyone, both as entertainment and as a potential career path.
