Police are appealing for information after a man was seen entering the River Irwell early on Sunday morning.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were called around 3.13 AM on Sunday, 26 October, to Irwell Street Bridge after receiving reports of a concern for welfare. Officers, along with specialist search and rescue teams, were at the scene throughout the morning.

The individual is described as a white male in his 20s, of average build, with short brown hair faded at the bottom. He was last seen wearing a grey jacket and black trousers.

Police are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with CCTV, dashcam, or mobile phone footage from around the Irwell Street Bridge area to get in touch.

Detective Inspector Paul Davies, from Salford’s Criminal Investigation Department, said:

“We understand how distressing this situation is, and I want to reassure the wider community that officers are working closely with specialist units to find the individual and notify those involved.

“We are dedicating a number of resources to locate him, and our enquiries remain ongoing to establish the circumstances of this incident.

“Scenes are currently in place around the bridge and river, and we urge anyone with information to come forward and report it to police.”
