Salford Swimming Clubs has quietly become one of the most successful programmes in the North West. Producing European champions and doubling membership post-pandemic.

Whilst Salford is known for its sporting giants such as the Salford Red Devils and Salford City, Salford Swim at Worsley Leisure Centre has been conquering Europe and producing some of the top talent in the region and earned itself a silver at the most recent awards ceremony, marking another milestone achievement that has put Salford firmly on the swimming map.

Over the past years, Salford Swimmers have achieved remarkable national and international success. Among them, Amelie Blocksbridge, a five-time European Junior Champion, who was given the honour of presenting the awards ceremony at the North West Awards. Which was described as “Nothing short of deserved.”

Assistant head coach Nelson Thomas said, “Amelie is the benchmark for the others to aspire to. She’s brought pride not only to Salford but to the region.

“Per capita, we have produced the highest quality Athletes out of anybody. We’re not the biggest club, but our results speak for themselves.”

The club’s success comes after a period of rebuilding. Post-COVID membership has nearly doubled, alongside its work with Salford Community Leisure, the team has created a clear pathway from community swimming lessons to elite competition.

“We take swimmers from our community lessons into our performance programme. It means there’s continuity in the sport and opportunities for every young swimmer in Salford to go further.”

Head coach John Stout was praised by Thomas for spearheading the “extremely efficient system.” John has overseen the development of several national champions and international athletes. As well as producing the Great Britain Junior team members, Blocksbridge, Katie Lee, and Ben Ross

“Salford is a phenomenally passionate city. It’s very much a community that champions its own, and that lifts everyone to achieve more.”

Looking ahead, Thomas hopes to see more Salford swimmers competing on the national stage and maybe representing Team GB at future Olympics.

“If we can keep this momentum going, there’s no reason we can’t see Salford swimmers at a senior international level. The potential is absolutely there.”

With another year of growth ahead and a new generation of swimmers coming through, the City of Salford swimming club looks set to keep making waves, both in the pool and across the region.
