A group of Salford-based musicians are set to celebrate Black History Month with a fusion of music and poetry.

The Scattered Collective is an ensemble entirely made up of Salford University students that draws inspiration from popular and folk music from around the world.

To mark Black History Month, the group of student musicians will perform at the New Adelphi Atrium on Wednesday 22 October, alongside poets and dancers.

The performance takes place at 12:30 pm and will showcase a rich tapestry of global sounds and stories, featuring music from Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Cuba and more. The event is aiming to honour black history and culture through voice and creativity while reflecting diversity in The University of Salford.

The ensemble will include a mix of talent from across the university, including PhD student and poet Teni Osayemi, three international students, and several level 4 music students.

Osayemi will perform two of her original poems, offering a personal contribution to the celebration.

The ensemble, now in its ninth year, changes in size depending on musician availability in each student cohort.

It allows students to develop their musical breadth, with the group’s repertoire stretching from Europe, through to India, Sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia and South America.

The event at the New Adelphi is free to attend. More information is available here.
