Salford City are set to host League One side Lincoln City in the first round of the FA Cup.

Karl Robinson’s side made history last season as they reached the competition’s third round for the first time, before losing 8-0 to Premier League giants Manchester City.

The Ammies will be hoping for another memorable cup campaign, with a chance to test themselves against opposition a division higher.

Lincoln City, nicknamed the Imps, currently sit in sixth place in League One, within the play-off places, winning six of their opening 11 games.

The two sides have never met competitively before, with the fixture set to take place on the first weekend of November, with match details still to be confirmed.

Salford beat League One Shrewsbury Town 2-0 in the first round of last year’s competition thanks to a brace from veteran midfielder Matty Lund.

The club also made competition history in last season’s competition, as youngster Marshall Heys became the youngest player to ever play in the FA Cup, aged just 15 years, two months and six days old.

Salford then went on to face Cheltenham Town in round two, again winning 2-0, before facing Man City in round three.

Pep Guardiola’s side were ultimately too good for their opposition, with Salford-born midfielder James McAtee scoring a hat-trick in the 8-0 drubbing.

Despite the heavy defeat, Karl Robinson remained proud of his side for creating history.

Ten years ago, Salford beat Bradford Park Avenue 1-0 in the FA Cup third qualifying round, thanks to an extra-time winner from Richie Allen.

At the time, Salford were in the Northern Premier Division, still three steps away from the EFL, showcasing how far they have come as a club in such a short time.

Lincoln themselves are no strangers to historic cup runs, having famously reached the quarter-finals in the 2016/17 season, losing out to eventual winners Arsenal.

Progressing through the early rounds of the FA Cup is huge for sides lower down in the English football pyramid, as it provides the potential of a televised tie against bigger Premier League or Championship opposition in round three, earning clubs money they do not usually have access to.

The prize money for progressing through the first round is £45,000.

Salford will be looking to improve their league form prior to the tie, after the Ammies slumped to three league defeats in a row, with fixtures against Oldham and Gillingham coming up in League Two.

Salford City face Greater Manchester rivals Oldham Athletic on Saturday, 3pm kick-off.
