England Women winning the world cup

Salford Red Devils Women’s coach Marcell Lock hailed the success of England’s “inspirational” Red Roses after the team won the Rugby World Cup.

A 33-13 rout of Canada in last Saturday’s World Cup final at Allianz Stadium has given their dominance of the game the ultimate validation and exorcised the demons of near misses at previous tournaments.

England extended their winning run to 33 consecutive victories by winning the showpiece on home soil. Their last defeat came against New Zealand’s Black Ferns in the 2022 final.

The Salford Community Stadium was selected as a host venue for the tournament and staged four matches.

And Lock declared that England’s triumph will have a positive effect on women’s Rugby in Salford: “The success of the England Women’s team in winning the World Cup will, no doubt, have a huge impact on women’s sport across the country,” she said.

“Achievements like this don’t just showcase the incredible talent at the top level; they also inspire the next generation of players by showing them what’s possible.

“For us, it means more young girls and women are seeing rugby as a sport they can belong to, whether that’s playing rugby union or rugby league, coaching, or supporting.

“Once young girls witness the success of their home country at a major sporting event like the RUWC, it can spark a passion for physical activity and team sport.

“This engagement not only encourages them to become more active but also helps them build confidence and skills to explore and transition through a wide range of sports, including rugby league.

“Our hope is that this momentum continues to grow, and that we can provide the pathways, opportunities, and support to ensure every woman and girl who wants to play rugby has the chance to do so here at Salford Red Devils Women’s.”

From Salford Red Devils, to Eccles RFC Women and Broughton RFC’s Valkyries there are several Women’s Rugby teams competing regularly in the City’s local leagues.

Most rugby clubs across Salford have women’s teams ranging from younger ages to adults, and are always open for new players and for women and girls to get involved with their sport.

It is hoped that the success of the Red Roses will help grow the number of Women playing Rugby in Salford.
