Healthwatch Salford is calling on residents to back a nationwide petition to protect the independence of local Healthwatch services, after government plans to abolish them were announced.
Sam Cook, Chief Officer of Healthwatch Salford, stressed the importance of keeping the organisation free from outside control, saying: “We pride ourselves on giving the public a voice, our independence is what makes that possible.”
Healthwatch is a statutory body set up in 2013 to represent patients and the public in health and social care.
There is a Healthwatch in every local authority area across England, giving communities a way to raise concerns, share experiences, and influence how services are delivered.
Each branch is independent, but part of a national network overseen by Healthwatch England.
The government is currently reviewing whether local Healthwatch organisations should remain independent or be brought under local authority or NHS structures.
A move campaigners say could weaken their ability to challenge the system and hold accountability when necessary.
Cook said there is “a lot of local support for the petition”, and added that “the mayor stands by us.”
She urged residents to continue to make their voices heard, and explained: “People should push for their independent voice (and) challenge the system.”
The petition, backed by Healthwatch Salford and other branches nationwide, calls on the government to reconsider the proposals and safeguard the role of independent local Healthwatch.
When asked what message she would give to those yet to sign, Cook appealed directly to the community: “If they’ve had a good experience with us or simply care, please sign. If they don’t feel comfortable, share it with their network, friends, or engage with what we share.”
The petition remains open online, with Healthwatch Salford encouraging residents to act before decisions are finalised.
