Walkden’s community spirit was on full display as Walkden in Bloom teamed up with St John’s in the Community for a day of collective action aimed at making the area cleaner, greener and more connected.

The event, held as part of the town’s annual Scarecrow Festival, was intended a vibrant mix of creativity, kindness and action bringing people of all ages together.

Activities included scarecrow making, food bank collections and a community litter pick, focusing on improving the local environment and supporting those in need.

Paul Whitelegg, Vice Chair of Walkden in Bloom said: “Events like these aren’t just calendar fillers, they’re the heartbeat of Walkden’s community spirit. These activities bring residents together, build pride in our neighbourhood and create shared memories that remind us we’re stronger when we work side by side.”

The scarecrow making sessions was filled with creativity and laughter, with children and families crafting unique designs that will be displayed as a part of the town’s festival celebration.

One of the most meaningful parts of the day was the food bank collection, where residents donated supplies to help local families in need, highlighting the strength of Walkden community.

Paul Whitelegg said: “As we look to the future, Walkden in Bloom aims to continue planting seeds not just in soil, but in hearts and minds. Our upcoming well-being projects will focus on green spaces for mental health, more inclusive events for all ages, and deeper partnerships with schools, local groups and charities.

Paul also added: “We want Walkden to be a place where everyone feels they belong and where the beauty we create outside reflects the strength we nurture within. Together, we’re not just blooming; we’re thriving.”

Walkden In Bloom hopes to expand on this with new projects planned for the future.
