Salford City were left heartbroken at Bristol Rovers after a missed penalty denied them a share of the points.
The Ammies’ trip to the Memorial Stadium got off to a great start as midfielder Matt Butcher, returning to the club where spent the second half of last season, opened the scoring for Salford in the 11th minute. Following a loose ball, the midfielder fired a well-struck half-volley from the edge of the penalty box.

It was a deserved lead for Karl Robinson’s Salford side who controlled the majority of the first half and had the better chances.
However, the game turned just before the break. Rovers captain Alfie Kilgour headed down a long free kick from Luke Southwood into the path of Ellis Harrison, who converted from close range to equalise on the stroke of half-time. This equaliser shifted momentum firmly into the hosts’ favour.
In the second half, Rovers grew stronger and on 63 minutes a long free kick proved to be Salford’s downfall again, as their defence failed to clear a long free kick, allowing Fabrizio Cavegn to coolly slot the ball past goalkeeper Matt Young and give Rovers a 2-1 lead.
Following this, the Ammies continued to search for an equaliser and they were handed a golden opportunity when they were awarded a penalty after Jorge Grant was deemed to be fouled.
Salford Captain Luke Garbutt stepped up to take the penalty but keeper Luke Southwood guessed right and was able to save the penalty.
To add further frustration, Haji Mnoga was sent off for violent conduct in the dying moments of the game, meaning Salford would finish the match with ten men.
