Salford City travel to Shropshire this Saturday to take on Shrewsbury Town, as they look to build on last weekend’s victory over Tranmere Rovers.
The game marks Salford’s first trip to the Croud Meadow in league action, with kick off at 3pm. The pair have met three times previously, all in the FA Cup, with Salford running out 2-1 winners in last season’s competition on their historic run to the third round.
The Ammies will be looking to build on their solid start to the season, having won four of their opening seven, leaving themselves in 8th, just outside the play-off places.
Their opponents find themselves at the opposite end of the table in 21st, only winning their first game of the campaign last weekend against Barnet, despite dropping down from League One last season.
Salford won their last fixture, after going two games without a win in the league, beating Tranmere 3-1 at the Peninsula Stadium.
New striker Dan Udoh, who signed on deadline day, is a familiar face to the hosts, having spent five years at the club, scoring 31 goals in 155 appearances. Udoh will be looking to build on his impressive debut, where he picked up two assists.
The Shrews also bolstered their attack late in the transfer window, with Bradley Ihonvien joining on loan from Peterborough. Ihonvien has three goals in his last two and it will be a tough test for the Ammies backline, who have only kept one clean sheet in League Two this season.
Karl Robinson was impressed with his side’s performance last week, he said: โI thought it was superb, I canโt get over how good we were, really good. One of the most Iโve been impressed by my team for years, in the first half, that was a Salford performance without the cherry on top which was the goals.”
Both sides will likely set up in a similar way, with three at the back and two strikers up front. Robinson and Shrewsbury manager Michael Appleton share a connection, having both managed Oxford United in the past.
Based on league positions and form, Salford certainly go into this one as favourites, with both sides needing a win for different reasons.
