Karl Robinson post match against Wigan in the Vertu Trophy - https://www.salfordcityfc.co.uk/news/2025/september/02/reaction---karl-robinson-on-wigan-victory/

Salford City Head Coach Karl Robinson was happy to share his thoughts after his side beat Wigan Athletic 2-0.

The victory for the Ammies ended Salford’s run of three away defeats in the competition and has got them off to a winning start.

Travelling away to the Brick Community Stadium, Salford City were able to get the tournament off to a winning start, putting them level on points and goal difference with Stockport County – who beat Wolverhampton Wanderers U21s 5-3.

The fixture was also used as a good opportunity for Karl Robinson to maximise his squads uses, and rotate the squad to give players minutes, and work on certain areas on field before their league fixture this weekend.

And this was shared by Karl Robinson after the win against Wigan on SCFC TV, as he said: “This competition is quite unique because it gives you opportunities for multiple purposes.

“We used it for tactical reasons, as well as metres in the legs in some ways and then we’re trying to find the fluidity in certain things.

“There’s probably 70% of what we would class as our starting eleven, so it wasn’t like we were at full strength at large parts of the game.”

And with his Salford City not a full strength but still able to beat League One rivals, Karl Robinson shared his praises after the 2-0 victory.

He continued: “That’s why it’s pleasing when you come away from these nights with a positive result.

“It’s nice to get off with a win in this competition and it gives a chance now to build some confidence going to the game back at the weekend as well with all our players in that perfect sweet spot to perform properly.”

Salford City will now await their next fixture in the Vertu Trophy, where they will host Stockport County at the Peninsula Stadium on Tuesday 7 October.

However, Karl Robinsons’ side will be looking to reaffirm their league focus as Salford City will host Tranmere Rovers this weekend – as the Head Coach looks to get his side back to winning ways in the league.
