Salford City earned their first home win of the season beating Accrington Stanley 2-1, continuing their winning league form.
The Ammies, who struggled on the opening day at home against Crewe Alexandra, were able to reignite their home form this past weekend against the Reds.
Karl Robinsons’ side have now won back-to-back league games – and were taking confidence into the fixture following their EFL Cup exit to Rotherham United.
And Salford made a bright start to the game with Jay Bird having a few early chances, even putting the ball in the net too but it was disallowed after the referee ruled it out for holding onto Devon Matthew’s shirt in the build-up.
Following the early chances, it seemed that the fixture was an even affair with both sides seemingly to work one another out – but the game seems to move more in Salford’s favour.
And this proved true in the 23rd minute, when Matty Young sent a ball forward towards Kadeem Harris, who controlled the ball and carried it up the line.
Harris did well to drive the ball up the line – and he was able to pick out Ben Woodburn who was in space on the edge of the box.
Under very little pressure he was able to pick his spot and drill the ball low into the bottom corner for the lead, a superb effort to catch the keeper off-guard.
And the Ammies momentum continued in the 27th minute when ex-Stanley winger Ros Longelo was fouled right on the edge of the box.
Awarded a freekick on the edge of the box, Luke Garbett stepped up and was able to brilliantly curl the ball over the wall into the top corner – leaving goalkeeper Michael Kelly flat footed for the effort.
But despite Salford City taking the two-goal advantage – Accrington Stanley didn’t sit off and take the defeat, Isaac Sinclair’s low drive from the right came off the post.
However, as the second half started Karl Robinsons’ side maintained their pressure when Bird was presented with another opportunity after Kallum Cesay slipped a pass to the right as Salford broke, but with the angle narrowing he blasted his shot into the side netting.
Following Salford City’s efforts, Accrington had a moment to forget a few moments later.
And it should have been 2-1 after Isaac Sinclair managed to find his way in behind the Salford defence on the right.
He squared a ball for Woods to simply tap in, but the striker managed to sky his effort over the bar from five yards out.
With the game still at 2-0, it looked as though Salford had weathered the storm of chances from the away side.
However, with six minutes on the clock, the former Huddersfield man was judged to have fouled Walton inside the box with the referee awarding a penalty.
Walton stepped up himself, and sent Young the wrong way to made it 2-1 – and despite a late response from Salford with Cole Stockton latching onto through ball and hitting a shot towards the near post.
Salford City were able to secure all three points and their first home win of the season – they Ammies will look to maintain their form as they face Newport County on Tuesday 19 August at the Rodney Parade.
