Plans submitted to transform former supermarket building into Aldi and PureGym - Google Maps

Plans have been submitted to transform a long-vacant 50,000 sq ft supermarket in Ordsall that has been empty since 2016.

The former Morrisons supermarket, on Trafford Road north of the Travelodge hotel, opened in 2011, but was shut five years later, alongside the Little Hulton location, as part of a cost-cutting drive.

The new plans want to transform the huge site into three different units for Aldi, Pure Gym and another occupier or business.

The Aldi store would occupy 24,200 sq. ft and the Pure Gym would span 17,500 sq. ft, with the third unit covering 3,400 sq. ft.

For the planning application, landlord RC Trafford Road is being supported by Fordis Capital, which says it is seeking to “breathe life” back into a vacant local centre anchor, delivering clear public benefit with minimal intervention.

The application continued: “It represents precisely the kind of sustainable, design-led reuse that the Salford Local Plan and NPPF seek to promote.”

The former supermarket building is close to both Exchange Quays, and Anchorage tram stops, with multiple bus stops around the area.

The location will also be close to several nearby apartment blocks and other housing, with an existing 297-space multi-storey car park next door.

Salford City Council has set a target decision date for 20 September 2025. More information can be found through the planning application on PA/2025/1098.
