Two months on from the launch of Try Tag Rugby in Salford, the sport has continued to grow and bring together members of the community.

Since launching on Thursday 29 May, it has seen thirteen teams formed and more than 130 women and men play tag rugby together in spirited competition.

During the first two months, tag rugby has also allowed members in the community to get fit, whilst playing a contact-free competitive sport.

Today (Tuesday 29 July) marks two months since the league was launched in Salford and has already seen 651 tries scored, with 221 female tries making up that number.

Try Tag Salford continued to share how they have been able to engage a mix of male and female players to participate in the game.

They said: “Tag rugby’s physical mixed-gender format is a key part of its appeal; it brings people together and makes the game truly inclusive.

“It’s not just about a sport; it’s also a great way to meet new people. Already, strong friendships have formed between players who didn’t even know each other two months ago.”

The sport itself has been building strong community relationships but has also been brilliant at improvement health for participants.

As the spokesperson continued: “Tag rugby promotes physical and mental wellbeing. It’s a great way to stay active while also expanding your social circle.”

And this growth of popularity in Salford has seen residents join over 11,000 people who played weekly across 31 different locations across the nation in 2024.

These included people from 16 London boroughs and major cities including Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, and Sheffield.

A spokesperson from Try Tag Salford said: “The growth has been incredible, and we’re excited to see even more people get involved as the word spreads.

“We were hopeful for a strong start, but reaching 13 teams so quickly has exceeded all expectations, it’s been a dream start.

“The credit goes to the amazing community that’s formed around the league. We’ve built a fun, welcoming space where new players feel right at home from day one.”

The game is suitable for beginners, and for all ages and gender – welcoming anyone who wants to participate to the sessions at Broughton Cricket and Rugby Club every Thursday.

And as winter months are approaching Try Tag Salford will be moving their league fixtures to Abraham Moss 3G pitches from September.

But as the game continues to grow over the summer – they have also shared their plans as it develops, a spokesperson said: “We’re focused on growing the game across Salford long-term. One of the best things about tag is that it is a year-round sport.

“Next year, we’re looking to expand to new locations across Salford. We also organise regular post-match socials, which help strength the community and support local businesses.”

And for those doubting whether to participate or not, Try Tag Salford also shared why people should consider a taster session, they said: “It’s suitable for all genders and fitness levels, and it’s a brilliant way to get active, meet new people, and be part of something fun an positive.

“We’re building something special here in Salford, and we’d love more people to join the journey.”

Residents interested will be able to enjoy a free taster session – with more information about the sport being found here.
