Tommy Porter scores the Lions first - MKS Sports Photography

Swinton Lions travelled to Birmingham with a large following, where they beaten by the Midlands Hurricanes 38-26.

The game started in quick fashion, with former Lion Matty Chrimes putting the Hurricanes ahead when he dived at the corner despite the best efforts of Conrad Hurrell to knock him into touch, but he could not convert.

But the Lions were able to respond quickly, as in the 16th minute Hurrell offloaded to the supporting Will Roberts and as he was ankle tapped near the line.

However, he was able to pass out to Tommy Porter who scored under the posts and Dan Abram converted.

The Swinton Lions were able to continue the scoring as ten minutes later they were in again when George Roby exploited a gap in the defence to cut through and score under the posts with Abram again converting.

And with the Lions leading, the gap was closed by former Lion Luis Roberts who crossed in the right corner for their second try on the half hour mark, but the Hurricanes were unable to convert again.

The Swinton Lions were able to extend their lead once again, when Dan Abram was able to convert a penalty goal after Hurricanes Zeus Silk was sent to the sin bin for a dangerous tackle.

However, coming out for the second half the Hurricanes came out with determined to get back into the game, being behind 8-14.

Luis Roberts made a seventy-metre break for the line but a great cover tackle from Frank Sergent stopped him just short.

The next try came soon after this when Tom Wilkinson scored on the right and Chrimes hit his first conversion to level the scores.

Gav Rodden was sent to the sin bin on fifty-four minutes and Hurricanes made most of the extra man scoring twice in four minutes with Ellis Hobson and Ross Oakes both going over and being converted by Chrimes.

However, the Lions were not making it easy for the Hurricanes as they were able to hit back again on sixty-four minutes when Will Roberts found a gap to score, and Abram converted to put the Lions within six points.

Although the gap was then later extended with Chrimes adding his second of the day and converting to re-extend the lead.

The game was going from end to end and with four minutes left Rodden knocked away to defenders to score on the left and Abram converted again.

But with only seconds left Hurricanes cemented the victory when Jon-Luke Kirby scored on the left and Chrimes converted as the hooter sounded, with referee Geoffrey Poumes ending the fixture.

The Lions lost 38-26, following the defeat they will be looking to get back to winning ways as they return to Heywood Road on Sunday 15 June, when they face Workington Town.
