suspected firearm

Salford officers have authorised a section 60 authority in Lower Broughton after a suspected firearm was brandished at a police officer.

A Section 60 grants police the power to stop and search people and vehicles in a designated area and time, even without reasonable suspicion.

If a senior officer believes there is a risk of serious violence or that weapons are being carried. This power is different from normal stop and search, which requires reasonable suspicion of criminal activity.

It has been introduced until 3.30pm this afternoon in the Lower Broughton area following reports of a suspected firearm was brandished in the face of an officer on duty yesterday (Tuesday 20 May 2025).

The officer had observed a group riding e-bikes dangerously and behaving anti-socially on Great Clowes Street.

As the officer approached the group, one of the individuals pointed a suspected firearm in his face. The officer deployed his Taser, and additional patrols were immediately dispatched to the scene.

With support from NPAS and armed officers, two men were detained on North George Street, Salford – and remain in custody for questioning.

Following the decision from the authorisation, Detective Superintendent Simon Moyles from our Salford district said: “I would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding while we try and establish the full circumstances around this incident.

“Extra patrol officers have been deployed around the local area both on foot and in patrol cars. If you have any concerns about this incident our officers will be happy to provide reassurance and listen to any of your queries.”

He continued: “Our investigation is progressing, and this is just one measure we are putting in place to assist our enquiries.

“This incident is entirely unacceptable and highlights how quickly situations faced by our frontline officers can escalate. We are also looking after the welfare of the officers who were involved in this incident.”

DSI Moyles added: “Our officers work tirelessly to keep our communities safe and should never be placed in such danger.

“We are still appealing for people to submit information to assist our investigation. If you have any information, please call police on 0161 856 4477 quoting log 1480 of 20/05/25. If you would prefer to remain anonymous, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
