Match preview: Salford City

Salford City confirmed their retain and release list following the 2024-25 campaign, with seventeen players leaving the club. 

The Ammies, who finished their first full season under the management of Karl Robinson and were able to finish eighth in the league narrowly avoiding the playoff positions.

And the action packed season for Salford saw them take it to the last day of the season, but were unable to make see the post-season campaign after a 2-2 draw to relegated Carlisle United.

Following the end of the season, the club confirmed yesterday (Monday 12 May) that seventeen players will leave the club.

The announcement follows the news of the new change in ownership that was announced on Thursday 8 May, with an new ownership group led by David Beckham and Gary Neville – with US-based businessman Declan Kelly and Lord Mervyn Davies confirmed as the new chair.

Seventeen players will leave the club with the longest-serving player Matthew Lund named alongside, Conor McAleny and Liam Shephard, as well as Ryan Watson named in the released list.

The four will exit the club after being involved in key moments during their time at Salford – including the close push for promotion during the 2022-23 season.

Following their departure the club wished them the “very best wishes and gratitude for their efforts and professionalism throughout their respective stays.”

Other exits included academy graduates Liam Humbles, Ben Collins, Aiden Lancaster, Eze Bowen, Matty Cucos, Jacob Hamman and Kamoy McNair.

Jon Taylor, James Carr, Callum Morton, Jez Davies, Marcus Dackers and Sandro Da Costa will also be leaving when their deals end.

Salford City said: “Thank you to all of those leaving the Club for your efforts, and good luck in your future careers.”

The exits will also include loanees Stephan Negru, Tyrese Fornah, Matty Young, Kylian Kouassi, Lewis Warrington and Frankie Okoronkwo return to their parent clubs.

The club shared following: “We would like to thank the players and the clubs for their efforts and trust throughout the season.”

Despite all the exits, ten players remain under contract which include Kelly Nmai, Tom Edwards, Kevin Berkoe, Cole Stockton, Ben Woodburn, Dan Chesters, Junior Luamba, Rosaire Longelo, Josh Austerfield, and Robbie Cleary.

The club also shared that they have triggered the option to extend the contracts of Supporters’ Player of the Year, Ossama Ashley; as well as Haji Mnoga; and Luke Garbutt.
