A unique and immersive art experience has opened at the Lowry, bringing the famous painting Going to the Match to life.
The experience, Lowry 360, opened on Saturday 3 May, and will allow Salford residents to hear factory whistles, excited chatter of an expectant crowd, as they head to the match.
The ambitious experience is one like no other, paying tribute to the exceptional skill of LS Lowry’s work, whilst also capturing the daily lives of working people – then and now.
The experience has opened as a part of the Lowry’s 25th Anniversary programme, celebrating the creativity, productivity, and art that the Salford theatre has been able to provide since 2000.
And the Lowry will continue to showcase its accessibility for all, as it opens as the UK’s first free permanent immersive experience.
At this current time, Salford residents will be able to make an initial booking period until Saturday 31 August, with further bookings being made available soon.
Walking into the experience, you are welcomed in before the immersive art exhibition transforms around you – with the in-depth perspective being brought to life with the help of Bolton-born actor, narrator, writer and comedian, Sophie Willan narrating the experience.
From blank walls, residents will be taken back to 1953 and feel immersed into LS Lowry’s world.
Whether it is a fan walking into the ground, the history of Bolton Wanderers, down the streets and along the cobbled roads or even a small dog on the canvas – residents will be able to explore this painting throughout the 15-minute timeslot.
Visitors will be surrounded by a creative exploration, in super-high resolution, of a painting that celebrates the excitement, anticipation, and ritual of going to a football match on a Saturday afternoon.
And as you stand there you can lose yourself in amongst the wonderful combination of both history and culture. For those who visit the experience will also be able to access the Modern Life: The LS Lowry Exhibition and visit the famous painting at the Lowry.
Following the experience being unveiled, Chief Executive of The Lowry Julia Fawcett OBE said: “It has been so important to us to the artist right at the centre of our birthday celebrations.
“It was absolutely top of our hit list for something like this to be achieved this year, and we wanted to bring in new audiences using Lowry’s work as a jumping off point to create that first immersive experience, whilst also making it free was absolutely crucial for us.”
And with the image being one of LS Lowry’s most famed pieces, Julia continued to share why it had to be Going to the Match.
She said: “It always had to be Going to the Match for us, we nearly lost the painting when it was nearly sold – and it means so much to so many people.
“So, we were able to buy it back, and we had to make sure that it was available for everyone to enjoy and appreciate together.”
Julia continued: It means everything to me to have something like this at the Lowry, it is what drives me to bring more people and engage people with what we do.
“Anything that allows us to connect people to art is so important and something like this will hopefully do that. ”
Visitors of the Lowry will have the opportunity to be connected to art and be involved in the free and immersive experience, in celebration of the Lowry’s 25th anniversary.
