Salford residents celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE Day with bacon butties, scones and wartime tunes this past weekend.

The celebrations were held at The Height Methodist Church’s coffee morning on Saturday 3 May, and saw residents come together to share memories and reflect on the day’s significance.

VE Day (Victory in Europe) which is celebrated on 8 May will be the 80-year anniversary of when Nazi German forces surrendered unconditionally to the Allies in World War Two.

And the coffee morning on Kings Street, Irlam’s o’th’Height, made sure to commemorate this with residents banding together over 1940s music, bacon butties, cakes and much more.

The special event at the church hall buzzed with conversation as attendees and allowed them to celebrate from 10am to 2pm.

Treasurer of the Methodist Church, Norman, 80, told us how he felt about the day and why it was important to bring people together.

He said: “It is nice to come to these coffee mornings, there is usually about 20 people that come. This is a special one because it’s for VE Day.”

Cathy Connett was an attendee on the day, she said: “I think it’s good we celebrate peace, because it’s 80 years of relative peace. We are very lucky in our part of the world, it’s not so lucky in other parts of the world.

“We appreciate the event these lovely people put on for us today,” she added, “they have gone through a lot of trouble, and I always support events here whenever I can. It’s the heart of our village.”

Throughout the morning event it saw volunteers join, with other residents sharing their thoughts on the important of the coffee and chat.
