Dementia event - RHS Garden Bridgewater

A Salford-based non-profit organisation is set to host its fourth annual Forget Me Not Dementia Remembrance Celebration event this May.

Aspire Care and Support is partnering with RHS Garden Bridgewater for the event to mark Dementia Action Week on Thursday 22 May.

The annual free event will take place from 1pm to 3pm and will allow guests to join the RHS Garden Bridgewater team to plant forget-me-not seeds in takeaway plant pots to grow at home in their own garden or larger pots.

The forget-me-not flower symbolises remembrance and is often associated with Dementia. It blooms year after year to give a gentle reminder of those no longer with us.

While the event will also be used to raised awareness for Dementia and the almost one people in the UK that have the disease.

Lisa Dickinson, CEO of Aspire for Intelligent Care and Support said: “Awareness campaigns like this help to increase people’s knowledge of the symptoms of dementia or highlight where they can seek the right help and support.

“We have lived experiences of losing family and the people we support to Dementia, so as well as raising awareness, we want to provide an opportunity for people to remember their loved ones during this significant week, and to celebrate their lives and legacies in a beautiful setting.”

Aspire have held the event at RHS Bridgewater for the last three years, and they look forward to the event being their once again for the fourth time.

Lisa continued: “It’s a meaningful and uplifting event which offers people strength as we stand together to reflect on happier times and remember those we love.”

This was echoed by Chris Seward, Dementia Lead at Aspire, who said: “We are honoured to host this event, it has now become an annual tradition, bringing people together to remember and celebrate those dear to them.

“Horticulture has proved to be a great activity for people with dementia, helping to focus concentration and reduce anxiety, so it seemed very natural to partner with RHS to do something to support Dementia Action Week.”

Following the seed planting activity, a short service will be held in the Wellbeing Garden grounds, and reading will be given by Lisa Dickinson, Reverand Karen Own of St Mary’s Church Ellenbrook.

As well readings from people living with dementia, and volunteers from Aspire 2 Age Better, that will be followed by two-minute silence will also be held for reflection and remembrance.

Entry to the Dementia Memorial Service on Thursday2 2 May, from 1pm to 3pm, and will be free and open to anyone who would like to attend.

The venue will be fully accessible, and all-terrain wheelchairs are also available to hire from reception if required.
