Salford Central train station has officially reopened to passengers after being closed for more than 10 weeks.
The Salford train station was initially meant to open on Monday 21 April, however it was delayed until this morning (Wednesday 23 April).
The station was closed from Monday 10 February for a major £10 million revamp to modernise the station and will now open for passenger use.
The developments were made as part of the first phase of an overhaul to boost accessibility and improve the experience for passengers.
However, with the development expected to finish on Monday 21 April, it was delayed until today with the operator Northern needing more time to carry out final safety checks.
Following the final checks, the station has officially reopened for public use today, with a spokesperson from Northern saying: “Salford Central is now open and trains are running from the station once again.
“Upgrades include: a new roof on the upper level of the station building; widening of platform two; a new ticket office; better signage; passenger information points.”
However, following the completion of the work there will be additional closures at the station on Sunday April 27 and Sunday May 4 – trains will not stop at Salford Central on these days.
The spokesperson from Northern added: “Work will continue at the station over the coming months, in partnership with the Bee Network, to further improve accessibility to the station including new accessible toilets, a covered walkway to the lift on platform 1 and more inclusive passenger information displays, such as braille maps.”
Passengers are being encouraged to plan ahead as the improvement works will lead to some disruption on people’s journeys.
