A squash club in Monton has been a cornerstone of local sporting communities for over a century and continues to expand into a wider variety of sports.
The Monton Squash Club has been nestled in the historic Monton Sports Club in Eccles has been catering for players of different abilities since its inception in 1903.
The club has a wide range of players from juniors to seasoned team players – with the club encouraging an inclusive approach that allows individuals at any skill level to engage with the sport.
Squash is played by two players in a four-walled court with a small, hollow, rubber ball – with the objective of the game being to hit the ball in a such as way that the opponent is not able to play a valid ball.
The squash facilities were introduced during a significant development phase in the mid-70s, and this expansion transformed the club into a thriving hub for sports enthusiasts in the region.
Long-time squash player, Peter Youd, said: “I’m getting on a bit now, I’m 57, so it’s for fitness and team play. I’m Salford born and bred and very much a Salford lad, it’s nice for the community we do squash for juniors to bring them on to play.”
The North-West League is one of the biggest and most established squash leagues across Europe. Within this league, Monton has three teams made up of five players, with first, second, and third teams each playing in their respective divisions.
Youd continued: “Just do it, enjoy yourself, keep yourself fit, and it’s good camaraderie.”
Squash has been around for many years but has seen a large fall in players. The decline began in 2004 but from 2016, 425,600 people were involved with squash, but as of 2023, only 250,100 people in the UK play squash.

And with the recent rise of racket and ball sports like pickleball and paddle, squash could also begin to thrive again – and with the introduction of the sport to the Olympics in 2028, community hubs like Monton squash club will be at the forefront of bringing in new players.
Youd added: “It is important for younger people to get involved in squash, it’s very good conditioning and great for team play.”
Monton Squash Club continues to be a vital part of the local sporting scene, offering a welcoming space for both experienced players and newcomers alike.
And with a rich history and a commitment to fostering community engagement, the club plays a crucial role in keeping the sport alive in Salford.
As the popularity of racket sports evolves, Monton Squash Club remains dedicated to nurturing the next generation of players, ensuring that the love for squash will endure for years to come.
Whether you’re looking to improve your fitness, join a competitive team, or simply enjoy the social activity with fellow players, Monton offers something for everyone.
